Columbia sextet Cooter Scooters counts a diverse array of influences covering metal, jazz, folk, country and punk. Normally, this would come across as an aimless band merely listing presumably impressive bands it has, at some point, listened to, regardless of any actual influence. Here, though, the book exceeds its cover, meshing stoner-metal’s midtempo slog to indie-folk’s cock-eyed lyricism; punk’s directness to jazz’s penchant for detours.
